Stephen Lam

Born in Hong Kong, Stephen Lik-hin Lam - who will be giving his London début at this performance - is a choral and orchestral conductor based primarily in Vienna and Hong Kong. He is currently Musical Director with the Ponte Singers, Ponte Orchestra and the Hong Kong Pan Orchestra, with which he has conducted a wide range of technically challenging pieces including Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony. Stephen is also a busy travelling conductor who performs regularly and internationally with such orchestras as the St Petersburg Chamber Orchestra, Vienna Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, St. Stephen’s Cathedral Choir, Macau Youth Orchestra, and Musica Viva - with which he recently directed a fully staged production of Bizet’s Carmen. In addition, Stephen has served as Director and Guest Director for several prominent European music festivals, including the Maribor European Grand Prix and Czech Music Festival in Hradec Králové. In 2012, Stephen was invited by the Sichuan’s Provincial Education Department in China to be a regular guest lecturer, conductor and advisor for several local orchestras including the Sichuan Music University Symphony Orchestra.


A member of Vienna Singverein and St. Stephen’s Cathedral’s church choir, Stephen has performed many classics in collaboration with world-class conductors and musicians. He has also served as the principal violist of the Vienna Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and the conductor of the Chinesische Christliche Gemeinde Wien.

Currently a finalist on the prestigious orchestral conducting course at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna under the tutelage of Uroš Lajovic, Stephen started his violin studies with Chao Bee-darn at the age of four. He actively participated in overseas music competitions as a secondary school student of St Paul’s College, Hong Kong. Before studying in Vienna, he had also worked for the Arts Education Section of Hong Kong’s Education Bureau.
